How to Properly Remove Pet Urine From Your Carpets

by Jorel Cook / Monday, 24 August 2015 / Published in carpet cleaning, Uncategorized

Pet Stains

Even the most loving pet owners are willing to admit that pet urine in carpet can be frustrating. Accidents do happen from time to time, and when they do, knowing how to quickly and effectively clean up pet urine can help prevent long-term smells and spots from developing.

Be Sure to Act Quickly

If possible, clean up urine while it’s still wet. Once it dries, urine can stain your carpet and increases the chance of bacteria growth. Use something absorbent like a rag or paper towels to mop up as much of the urine as you can. You may find that walking or standing on the towel can help pick up the urine quicker. By removing urine while it’s still wet, you are also helping to lessen the bad smell.

Neutralizing and Cleaning

Next, you’ll want to clean the area with something that will neutralize the urine, limiting the damage it will cause. Using a product called Pet Odor Remover made by Chem-Dry will help minimize the smell and stain. You can purchase the professional strength product by calling us at 602-CHEMDRY or the consumer strength product at your local Home Depot in the cleaning section.  Chem-Dry’s World Famous Spot Remover also does a great job at removing the stain, especially if you catch it right away.

Slowly pour the solution onto the stained areas of the carpet allowing it to soak through to the lower fibers of the carpet. This will ensure the affected area is completely neutralized.

Let the carpet absorb the cleaning solution for 10 to 15 minutes before soaking it up with a rag or paper towels. Now you’ll want to let the carpet dry, which could take several hours. This should help to completely remove the smell of urine from the carpet.

Commercial Pet Stain Removers

There are a number of pet stain removers on the market today that claim to help deodorize and clean the affected area of your carpet. Some people have had success with these products while others have been disappointed. Still, if the vinegar and baking soda didn’t do the trick, you may find that spending some money on a commercial product may at least give you peace of mind.

Be sure you carefully read labels on these products to avoid damage to your carpet.

Professional Carpet Cleaning Service

The best way to make sure your carpet is clean after your pet has had an accident is to hire a professional carpet cleaning service like Dr. Chem-Dry to address the issue.
