Basic Rug Cleaning Tips
Keep your Area Rugs looking their best by completing the following simple, basic Area Rug care tips. Appropriately caring for your Area Rugs differs from rug to rug and is dependent on its size and material. The more delicate the material, the more care it requires. At Dr. Chem-Dry, we can help you determine the correct cleaning procedure based on your particular rug’s needs.
Vacuum – To ensure your Area Rug does not prematurely wear out, it is important to regularly vacuum it. If your Area Rug has fringe it will require a special technique. When vacuuming, use gentle suction and start from the rug’s center, working towards the fringe and back. Alternate your direction each time to avoid the formation of lines.
Shake – If you have a small enough Area Rug, you can take it outside to shake. This can be in addition, or in lieu, or vacuuming. Vigorously shaking and beating your rug will help remove embedded dirt and debris.
Brush – Just like when pet and human hair becomes stuck on our clothing, the same is true for Area Rugs. Often times left behind after vacuuming, hair can be quite tricky to clean up. One of the best recommendations we have for this situation is to use a stiff brush (similar to a dog’s brush) to remove existing hair from your rugs.
Avoid Spills – If a spill occurs, it is important to tend to it quickly to ensure that it does not set in. Quickly blot the area with a clean, white towel to remove the excess water. Do not attempt to use hot water to rinse the area, as this may damage it. Please feel free to consult with Dr. Chem- Dry on how best to clean your specific rug.
Washing Rugs – This Area Rug care tip should only be followed if its manufacture’s label states “machine washable” and it is small enough to fit into your washing machine. Be mindful to only use a mild detergent. Hang to dry. Avoid leaving your rug in direct sunlight as fading may occur.
Professional Cleaning – For maximum benefits, you should routinely have your Area Rugs professionally cleaned every 18 to 24 months. Our expert technicians have been extensively trained to properly care for all types and sizes of Area Rugs. Even the most delicate ones!
Rug Protection – Protect your Area Rug with Chem-Dry PowerGuard, Repel or Wool Protectant. Each formula is designed to match the needs of your carpet fibers to help minimize stains and make cleaning up spills easier.
Cleaning Special Types of Rugs – Care for and clean imported Area Rugs according to your carpet’s exact specifications. Always be careful when it comes to fringe. Heirloom-type rugs are not to be performed by DIY homeowners!
Please be aware that the aforementioned Area Rug care tips should only be adhered to if your particular rug does not specific “dry clean only”.
